Strong, Striking and Safe – Toughened Mirrors That Impress

Toughened Mirrors: The Stronger, Safer Choice for Stylish Spaces

When it comes to mirrors in commercial, retail, or high-traffic environments, strength, safety, and durability matter just as much as style. That’s why toughened mirrors have become the preferred choice for builders, architects, and interior designers.

At Precision Shower Screens & Robes, we manufacture custom toughened mirrors right here in Australia under our dedicated mirror brand, AusTuff Mirrors.

We’re also proud to be the only company in Australia with in-house silvering for toughened mirrors, using advanced DC sputtering technology. This innovative process allows us to deliver superior durability, stunning clarity, and fast turnaround.

What Is a Toughened Mirror?

A toughened mirror starts as a standard glass panel. It is first cut to size and then processed through a high-temperature furnace. This strengthens the glass by up to five times compared to ordinary float glass.

Once toughened, the glass cannot be cut or reshaped. For that reason, accuracy in the cutting stage is crucial, and we rely on CNC machinery for total precision.

Finally, we apply a reflective finish using our in-house DC sputtering silvering machine. This method delivers a durable, even mirror coating that resists corrosion and wear over time.

What Is DC Sputtering?

Direct Current (DC) Sputtering is a high-performance coating method used across advanced industries like semiconductors, optics, and decorative finishing.

Here’s how it works in simple terms:

  • A target metal (used for the mirror’s reflective layer) is placed inside a vacuum chamber.
  • The chamber is filled with argon gas, which is then ionised into plasma.
  • A high-voltage current is applied to the metal target.
  • This causes atoms from the metal to “sputter” off and settle as a thin, even film on the glass.

At AusTuff, we use DC Magnetron Sputtering – an advanced version that uses magnets to trap electrons. This increases coating speed, consistency, and efficiency, resulting in a high-quality mirror finish on toughened glass.

Compared to traditional wet-coating silvering, DC sputtering offers:

  • Superior clarity and reflectivity
  • Long-lasting durability
  • Better resistance to corrosion
  • A more environmentally stable finish

Why Choose Toughened Mirrors?

1. Enhanced Safety

Toughened mirrors are classified as safety glass. If they break, they shatter into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards. This makes them ideal for:

  • Gyms and fitness studios
  • Lift lobbies
  • Retail spaces and stores
  • Hotels and public change rooms
  • Busy commercial interiors

2. Exceptional Durability

Thanks to both the toughening process and the sputtered silvering finish, these mirrors are built to withstand impact, heat, and pressure. They’re perfect for high-traffic areas where longevity is essential.

3. Modern, Reflective Style

Toughened mirrors enhance the sense of space in any room. They reflect natural and artificial light beautifully and are ideal for:

  • Frameless bathroom installations
  • Full-wall feature mirrors
  • Commercial fit-outs
  • Architectural accents in luxury spaces

4. Custom Colours & Sizing

Our toughened mirrors come in a range of sleek, modern tones to suit your design aesthetic:

  • Silver
  • Light Grey
  • Grey
  • Bronze
  • Black

Each mirror is cut to your exact specifications using CNC equipment and polished for a flawless finish.

Where Can Toughened Mirrors Be Used?

We manufacture toughened mirrors for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Gym and fitness centre walls
  • Hotel and office lobbies
  • Commercial bathrooms and change rooms
  • Retail display areas and shop fit-outs
  • Lift interiors and entryways
  • High-end residential and architectural projects

Why Choose AusTuff Mirrors?

At AusTuff Mirrors, powered by Precision Shower Screens & Robes, we provide:

  • Australia’s only in-house DC sputtering silvering plant
  • Custom-manufactured mirrors, framed or frameless
  • Fast production and delivery for trade and commercial projects
  • CNC-cut accuracy and polished edge finishes

Bathroom Makeover? Compare Frameless & Semi-Frameless Shower Screens First!

Frameless vs. Semi-Frameless Shower Screens: Which One is Right for You?

Choosing the right shower screen can transform your bathroom’s look and functionality. However, with so many options available, deciding between a frameless and semi-frameless shower screen can be challenging. Both designs offer style, durability, and practicality, but they have key differences that might make one more suitable for your space. This guide will help you compare the advantages, costs, and maintenance of frameless and semi-frameless shower screens so you can make an informed choice.

What is a Frameless Shower Screen?

A frameless shower screen is made from toughened safety glass with minimal hardware. Unlike traditional designs, it does not require metal framing around the edges, creating a sleek, modern, and open appearance.

Benefits of Frameless Shower Screens

Sleek & Modern – No bulky frames, just clean glass for a minimalist look.
Easy to Clean – With fewer metal edges, there’s less soap and grime buildup.
Highly Durable – Uses thicker toughened glass, making it strong and impact-resistant.
Maximizes Natural Light – Creates a brighter, more open feel in the bathroom.

Best For:

  • Contemporary and luxury bathrooms.
  • Homeowners looking for a high-end, seamless finish.
  • Spaces where light flow and openness are a priority.

What is a Semi-Frameless Shower Screen?

A semi-frameless shower screen features a slimline frame around certain sections, usually for structural support. However, it still has frameless elements, offering a modern look at a lower cost than a fully frameless option.

Benefits of Semi-Frameless Shower Screens

Affordable Alternative – Delivers a stylish design without the higher price tag.
Extra Support & Durability – The framed edges provide added strength.
Stylish & Functional – Maintains a modern aesthetic while offering a bit more structure.
Ideal for Family Homes – The reinforced frame adds stability, making it great for high-use bathrooms.

Best For:

  • Budget-conscious homeowners wanting a contemporary look.
  • Family bathrooms needing extra durability.
  • Renovators looking for a balance between cost and aesthetics.

Semi Framed

Frameless vs. Semi-Frameless: Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature Frameless Shower Screen Semi-Frameless Shower Screen
Appearance Sleek, ultra-modern, and seamless Modern but with subtle framing
Maintenance Easier to clean (no frames to trap grime) Slightly more maintenance due to frame edges
Durability Strong, thick toughened glass Durable, with extra structural support from framing
Cost Premium price due to high-end design More affordable while still stylish
Best For Luxury bathrooms, modern homes Stylish renovations on a budget

Which Shower Screen is Right for You?

If you love a minimalist, high-end, and spacious design, a frameless shower screen is the best choice. It enhances natural light, makes a bathroom feel larger, and requires minimal cleaning.

However, if you need a budget-friendly yet stylish option, a semi-frameless shower screen is ideal. It offers a modern appearance, extra durability, and a lower price point, making it perfect for family homes and renovations.

💡 Still unsure which option suits your space? Our team can help you decide.
